Invasion Day +57 It defies all belief that Ukrainian's brave people have defied Russian evil for fifty eight blood soaked days and nights. What Putin thought would be a week long walk to imperial glory has resulted in a cataclysmic world situation where no-one is now really safe. Until Putin's tyranny is ended the world will always be at risk and all its people in it, Russians as much as any one.
Today, like for many of our correspondents in the UK at least, the pressing need to earn a living came calling and we apologise for the very late and short post today. We hope as many of you who read this one and have not seen yesterdays will be able to spend a few minutes doing so: it is incredibly moving to see the dance of thanks in a mountain meadow from a Lora, a young woman simply wanting life to be free and without fear.
We have a very full mailbag building up and will try to post the mail as soon as we can. Thank you all for bearing with us under this temporary pressure.
We are very much hoping for some good news here next week with the possibility of gaining some help from an incoming brave Ukrainian, safe from Kharkiv,. We will let you know how this goes. Fingers crossed. Hoggy
Todays Letters;
From Tom Docherty, Scotland
Dear Hoggy,
'Mutually Assured Destruction: The Fallacy of the Nuclear Deterrent Exposed'
And so the aberration that is Vladimir Putin continues his merciless attack on the people of an innocent nation who he perceives to be a threat to Russia... Utter garbage, he uses this conflict to secure his own position of power within Russia and deflect attention from the revelation that his regime is corrupt, evil and lining their pockets creating oligarchs with unimaginable wealth.
What action can the rest of the world take to stop this terrible onslaught of innocent people..... NOTHING..... Our possession of nuclear weapons has only created a bubble within which atrocities can be committed by the powerful on the weak utilising conventional weapons.
The threat of Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) protects Putin and others like him to progress their evil intent.
The nuclear deterrent does not safeguard the world, it allows destruction by stealth.
Time we woke up.
Dear Tom,
Another very powerful letter on this blog, amongst many of late, thank you very much for it.
We totally agree, the nuclear deterrent has proved to be no deterrent at all in the face of a madman, as you say the reverse in fact: we have created a bubble in which the tyrants feel they can can reign supreme.
The only answer sadly is to meet force with truth, and with all the death and destruction it entails, equal or greater force.
The war in Ukraine is now set to a long terrible war of attrition and bloodshed from which
no-one can really win. We are all losers.
The best we can hope for is an overwhelming collective and unified response to be maintained with a massive support for Ukraine so that the war can be stopped quickly.
Ukraine's sacrifice is for us all who live in freedom, we must do all we can now to stop the war and then as you are possibly hinting at, disarm all nations from nuclear weaponry. Disarm from all weaponry of mass destruction might be an idea, as impossible as that seems right now.
We look for answers.
But whilst we do people die.
A better world will arise once Putin is no more. He may gain swathes of fractured land, deport his captive slaves to chemically contaminated lands, commit atrocity upon atrocity but he can never fracture freedom. It is indivisible.
With best wishes Tom,
Hoggy
