Dire Days in the Donbas

Invasion Days + 92-93 The situation in the Donbas region is reported to be dire with Putin continuing to unleash hell upon anything in his way. The screws for his coffin lid are being sharpened and the queue to turn the tools that will seal him in for ever grows ever longer.

But there are glimmers of hope. Our reporters tell us that Ukraine is determinedly training and preparing for a major offensive and the Donbas is a holding operation until these preparations are ready. The war is set to drag ever on unless the west is prepared to make a much bigger effort to overthrow Putin quickly.

Our letter today is to ask our MP to support that request. We shall await his response which of course we shall publish here.

A long war of attrition looms unless the west can take decisive action, insurgency and the long struggle will probably down Putin in the end as it temporarily did in Afghanistan but at what cost? The war must be brought to an end to prevent this and the only way to bring this end about is to remove Putin. We can hope that the growing internal Russian dissent will aid this process.

We have news of possible new alliances for the blog: Newby and Scalby Library at Scarborough in North Yorkshire, are, like many around the country, hosting meetings on Mondays between 12 and 2pm. We shall endeavour to attend these and report on their great work here. Likewise in Scarborough we are hearing of a support group for Ukraine hosted by Ian Butterworth and we are endeavouring to make contract with him and the group. Sadly it is a Facebook group but we are working to overcome our fears for our writers of this medium for the greater benefit to be accrued.

More positive news is the advertisement by the local council for a Ukrainian support worker for the North Yorkshire area. The momentum grows.

If you hear and know about initiatives to support Ukraine in your own areas please let us know and we can advertise them here.

Please keep writing and see the prize competition offer by SUFT our resident cartoonist: short stories of around 500 words which can be considered for publication here and in Sunflowers 2 now under compilation. Send to the publishers direct: davidlewis@brynstowe.co.uk

Best wishes to all, especially in Ukraine right now.

Todays Letters:

From Hoggy to the Rt. Hon. Sir Robert Goodwill MP

Dear Sir Robert,

Moving on to Restore Global Leadership for Peace, Democracy and Freedom

Thank you for your continued dialogue over the leadership situation of the UK and the peace of the world. I maintain the position that in better times we should all be pushing for a leadership change at Westminster.

But these are not better times and the world is continuing to face a dire threat to the democratic freedom we have for so long enjoyed. And perhaps taken too much for granted. The threat to this way of life comes ever closer. City by city, life by life.

I am willing to move on from the pandemic stains Downing Street has left us with, noting both the considerable achievements and significant failures, but in the hope that the government you nobly represent amongst us here in Yorkshire will refocus its efforts on the threat we face from Putin's war in Ukraine.

The situation is dire and the readers I hold space for online (www.hoggytheyimp.com) seek reassurance that just because media interest has pushed the crisis off the news desk, it has not gone away and is creeping ever nearer.

Please can you push the government again for greater support to Ukraine?

The Ukrainian lives being lost are being lost for us, for democracy and for freedom. If Ukraine collapses Putin will seek to drag his dictatorship all over Europe, China will envelop the east and despots such as Kim Jong-Un will be emboldened to take risks the world will not be able to withstand. I am sure you and all in government are well aware of this but this is a plea from, and for, us, the 'ordinary folk' to be heard.

Downing Street has been badly distracted from the multiple crises we now face by domestic concerns, some of its own making. It is time to focus on freedom, the freedom we all need to make the world and this country a safer place from the far greater threat of climate change. To tackle this we need freedom from dictatorship. We need the war in Ukraine to end and the only way this can happen is by the defeat and removal of Putin.

Please will you support all moves to further increase the UK's response for the defence of Ukraine so that peace can be restored as quickly as possible?

For us all.

With best wishes as ever,

David (Lewis)
